How this calculator works

The calculator multiplies the count of each animal class by its assigned Livestock Unit factor and sums the results.

Formula used

Total LU = (Ewes × Ewe Factor) + (Rams × Ram Factor) + (Lambs × Lamb Factor)

Example calculation

If you have 100 ewes (factor 1.0) and 150 lambs (factor 0.5), your total LU is 100 + 75 = 175 LU.

What to do with this result

Use your total LU value to ensure compliance with local government grazing limits, nitrate directives, or grant applications.

One-off calculations are useful for quick checks, but farm decisions are better when records stay connected. HerdDeck Shepherd connects sheep records, weights, treatments, feed stock, costs and reports in one workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Livestock Unit (LU)?

A Livestock Unit (also called an Animal Unit) is a standard measurement used to compare the feed requirements of different types and ages of livestock.

Why do the factors vary?

Different governments and organizations define the baseline '1.0 LU' differently (e.g., a cow vs a sheep). Always check your local regulations.

Are lambs counted?

Usually, suckling lambs are ignored, but weaned lambs are given a fractional LU value. Check your local rules.

Why do rams have a higher factor?

Rams are generally much larger than ewes and consume more forage, so their LU factor is higher.
